Lottery scams etc

Information Update 140409

Warning about lottery and other scams

There are a number of e-mail and letter scams operating nationally. Below I set out the details of a recent scam which was uncovered, but I would ask you all to pass on the message – “If something seems too good to be true, it probably is!” Please ignore any request that asks for money or information, particularly bank details.
A scam letter scheme which could have netted an estimated £35m a year has been smashed by officers from the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca). It follows a police raid on a building in Somerset which was being used to process cheques for criminals abroad. Payments totalling nearly half a million pounds were recovered.
Cheques are now being returned to the 22,000 senders with a letter warning them about the scam and urging them to be more vigilant in future.
The letters, which were responding to international lottery scams and bogus offers, were intercepted by Soca during the raid in Somerset last June, before they could reach their final destinations overseas.
'Substantial blow'
They typically contained £20 cash and Soca believes the fraud could have yielded over £35m a year if it had continued.
Trevor Pearce, Soca's director of enforcement, said: "Mass market frauds are often sophisticated and convincing - criminals know just which buttons to press to make people part with money, especially in an economic downturn when we are more susceptible to believing good news."

People who respond to a scam can find themselves on a list which is sold to other fraudsters, and people can lose their life savings, he said.
"In this case we've been able to return people's money, and although the perpetrators are abroad and outside our jurisdiction, a substantial blow has been dealt to their operation by cutting off this particular channel," he said.
"The most powerful way to defeat the fraudsters though is to ignore them. Quite simply, be on your guard. Don't be a willing victim for their crime - if something seems too good to be true, it probably is."
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith congratulated Soca on the success of the operation, saying it sent a "strong message" to criminal networks that work was being done to stop them preying on innocent people.
She said: "We will continue to invest in agencies like Soca to enable them to tackle these criminals effectively. The public can be very confident that we are doing everything in our power to make it as difficult as possible for these groups to continue to operate."

Pearl XPS Ltd

I was passed on this information about this firm.

There was a group of door to door salespeople employed by a firm called Pearl XPS Ltd calling at pre war houses in Southend District yesterday (11.7.07) They offer free structural surveys. Anyone daft enough to take up the offer, will then be told by the surveyor that the house is in imminent danger of collapse and can only be saved by being coated. The surveyors are totally unqualified and the coating is as much use as tippex! Scare tactics are a normal part of their sales patter

The firm is known to Trading Standards and is currently under investigation by the DTI Scambuster Squad. Any information re Pearl XPS should be passed to Consumer Direct who are collating sightings, etc.

Please advise members of NW to be on their guard against this type of cold calling, not to sign any documentation they may be offered and under no circumstances to allow salespeople into their homes. Once in, the salespeople will not leave until the householder has signed on the dotted line.

According to the Companies House record, Pearl XPS was known as Anduraguard in 2006; and Wallcote in 2005. They also trade as Mosaic, which was featured on the BBC Watchdog programme

New Phone Scam

New Phone scam 17 11 06

Hi everyone, this has come to me via Heather, via another coordinator, originating from Lancashire police

If you receive a phone call on your mobile from any person, saying that, he or she is a company engineer, or telling that they're checking your mobile line, and you have to press #90 or #09 or any other number. End this call immediately without pressing any numbers. There is a fraud company using a device that once you press #90 or #09 they can access your "SIM" card and make calls at your expense.

Possible Phone/Bank Scam

This happened to one of our residents.

"I was phoned yesterday morning . There was a female-voiced recorded message saying something like, 'This is an important security announcement from Lloyds TSB. Please press any key.' I immediately put the phone down and emailed Lloyds. I received this phone call 3 times. Lloyds have emailed me back to say that they have no record of trying to call me."

I have heard of scams where either the phone bill racks up, or they go through a purported security check and get your personal details. I suggest that you put the phone straight down on such calls and contact your bank.

Phone Scams

This came on 2nd August via a coordinator. (Note the differences between this bulletin re the parcel scam and the original. It shows how messages evolve with time.)

I have just pasted this in as it arrived.

Phone Scam

I have been advised of a telephone fraud currently in operation — this applies to home and work telephones, landlines and mobiles.

If you receive one of these calls, upon answering the telephone you will hear a recorded >message congratulating you on winning an all expenses paid trip to an exotic location. You will then be asked to press 9 to hear further details. If you press 9 you will be connected to a premium rate line that costs approximately 820 per minute.

The final part of the call involves you being asked to key in your postcode and house number, which has other serious consequences. After a further 2 n minutes you will receive a message informing you that you are none of the lucky winners.

The total bill by then will be £100.

Even if you disconnect immediately, it will remain connected for a minimum of 5 minutes costing around £100.

Since the calls are from outside the UK, BT and other telephone companies are left relatively powerless to act. The only safe solution it to hang up on unsolicited free offer calls.

***

There is another scam operating on mobile phones as well. A missed call comes up. The number is 0709 0203840, the last four numbers may vary, but certainly the first four will remain the same. If you call this number back you will be charged £50 per minute. People have complained about their phone bills once they have realised the cost of the call, but apparently this is completely legal. So beware, do not call back numbers beginning with 0709. Please pass this information on.
